Text: John 15:4–5
For those of you who know me best, it won’t shock you that I ran out of gas last night—right as I was driving down Highway 46 through Elletsville.
I’m one of those guys who always says, “I’ll be fine. I’ll stop in a minute.”
Well… I stopped, all right!
And in that moment, I felt completely helpless, because there was absolutely nothing I could do.
In John 15:4-5 we see a profound passage regarding abiding in and just how vital it is to the Christian life.
Jesus said “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” John 15:4-5.
In short, Jesus is saying:
“I am the vine. You are the branches…. without Me, you can do nothing.”
Abiding in Christ is vital for our spiritual strength and stability.
A branch does not die because it stops trying.
A branch dies because it stops receiving.
All of its strength, sap, nourishment, and ability to bear fruit come from the vine.
The moment a branch is cut off or disconnected, three things happen:
1. Life stops flowing. No more water. No more nutrients. No more strength
2. Dryness begins. It may still look alive for a while, but the life inside is gone.
3. Fruit becomes impossible. A dead branch cannot grow anything.
Spiritually, this is exactly what happens when a believer stops abiding in Christ.
You may not be rebellious.
You may not be angry at God.
You’re just… disconnected.
You still look fine.
You still go to church.
You still put on a smile.
You still talk Christian.
You still serve.
You still say, “I’m doing great,” when someone asks how we’re doing.
But slowly……
Joy fades.
Peace weakens.
Love begins to dry up.
Spiritual power disappears.
Not because God left…
But because you stopped drawing from His power.
That’s why Jesus didn’t say:
“Try harder.”
“Do better.”
“Work more.”
He said: “Abide in Me.”
We must abide in Christ for life comes from connection, not effort.
Just like a car can do nothing without gas in the tank, we as believers cannot live the Christian life God desires without abiding in Christ.
A branch does not die because it stops trying. A branch dies because it stops receiving.
INSIGHT – From Reading
To abide means to dwell, remain, continue, rest in, or stay connected. It is being fixed and settled in Christ—continuing in Him day after day.
When we begin to lean on our own understanding instead of resting in Christ, we become much like a car without gas:
Without His power…..We feel drained. We feel distant. We feel joyless We feel frustrated. We feel dry.
If you’ve felt any of these, you are not alone.
But when these feelings combine, they can leave us feeling stuck—unable to move forward in our walk with God or even in life.
IMPACT- Staying Connected to The Vine
So what do we do? How do we stay connected to the Vine?
Here are some simple, practical ways to keep your spiritual tank full:
1. Start your day plugged into Christ Before you reach for your phone, reach for God. A few minutes in Scripture and prayer realigns your heart with the Vine.
2. Stay in God’s Word Not just reading in the morning, but meditating on it throughout the day. The Bible is how His life flows into you. You cannot stay connected to Christ while neglecting His Word. Below is a great resource on how the Bible works in different ways and areas of our lives. (Also if you would like some free resources I would love to pass them along to you. You’ll find my email address at the bottom of the page. Shoot me an email ill get back with you)
3. Talk to Him throughout the day Abiding is not just a morning habit—it’s a moment-by-moment relationship. Whisper prayers. Thank Him. Praise Him. Confess to Him. Adore Him. Ask Him for help.
4. Obey what He shows you Obedience keeps the connection strong. Disobedience weakens the flow. May God help us to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.
5. Refuel before you run empty. Don’t wait until you’re dry, frustrated, or burned out. Stay connected so you don’t run on fumes: Call or text a trusted Christian friend. Meditate on Scripture. Write in a journal. Attend church services Pray, even if you don’t know what to say……
Most of all, never forget that the God who created you loves you and cares about every facet of your life—the victories, battles, joy, and pain. He gives you a simple invitation:
Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you. — 1 Peter 5:7
We all need to be intentional about refueling our hearts and minds with the things of God. Abiding in Him is what keeps us from finding ourselves stranded and spiritually unable to move.
As we go about our day let’s ask God to help us stay consistently and intentionally abiding in Christ!

Steve,
This is wonderfully written and profound!
I Love it!
Thank You!

Sarah that means so much. You are my first comment to get! 😃 you know the writing part is not the issue that makes it difficult. It’s the technical part. I’m still trying to figure all this website stuff out. But God will and it’ll be a lot more that’ll be coming out over the next couple weeks. I just wanted to be something that will encourage believers but also if someone that’s not safe, comes across it. I want them to feel welcome, but most importantly hear the gospel. But I really appreciate you taking the time to send me that. It made my day!
