The Reality of Spiritual Opposition
1 John 4:4 — “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

John is writing to believers who were being confronted with false teachers — individuals who were spreading messages that sounded spiritual but were not rooted in the truth of Christ. These weren’t always obvious attacks from the outside; many of these voices were coming from within the broader religious community.
Because of this, John exhorts believers earlier in the chapter to “try (test) the spirits” — to examine what they hear and discern whether it truly aligns with the truth of God’s Word.
He said in 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
Believers, be Mindful to Know WHAT TRUTH IS and how you should SHARE IT.
As a believer we must be mindful of the three truths below when hearing a message about the things of God. Whether the message is from the pulpit, a program on TV or from any person, remembering these 3 truths will help you greatly to not accept or believe false teaching,
- A sincere message is not always a sound message.
- Truth is determined by God’s Word, not by passion or personality.
- Feelings may affirm what is said, but only Scripture can verify if it is from God.
🚨This is why knowing what the Bible is saying is so important for every Christian. To be able to test a teaching from the Bible, you need to know what the Bible says.
We also need to be mindful that John had strong conviction about the truth. He also had sincere compassion for the people. We know that because he wasnt scared or intimidated to warn them about false teaching. He wasn’t being mean by warning them. He warned them because he loved them.
🚨Whether it’s sharing the gospel with an unbeliever or having a discussion with someone who is believing false teaching. Approach the conversation with conviction clothed in compassion.
Have conviction about what you believe and compassion for the person you’re talking to. That’s paramount to be a witness for the Lord Jesus.
Seriousness of believing Spiritual error
John knew the serious of the situation. He didnt want others to be deceived by false teaching. Satan wants believers to be deceived. To believe lies. For that is who Satan is. Jesus when speaking of Satan in John 8:44 “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”
We are in a spiritual battle. That is serious and something we must be aware of. Satan desires to destroy the testimony of every follower of Christ. Therefore Satan would love nothing more than for us to believe lies.
We find ourselves in the same serious situation today in 2026. People are so confused they aren’t sure what’s the truth and what’s a lie. Sadly countless numbers of those who say they are believers are being deceived by what a “Religious” teacher, preacher or person they know says.
The Bible must be our Final Authority
🚨We need to make sure any teacher or a preacher who speaks about the Lord is staying true to the Bible. That truth applies to any, and everyone who speaks about the things of God. It may be a co-worker, family member or friend that is believing an error they have been told. Compare it with scripture, if it’s false, then lovingly with conviction and compassion speak with them about it
Greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world
In the midst of John’s warning, he does something wonderful. He reminds them that even though all this is going on around them……..
They are not defenseless and they are not powerless against deception, darkness, or spiritual opposition. He reminded them wherever they go they are not alone.
They had a defender. They had One who is more powerful. They had One who can overcome darkness with light. They had One who never backed down from opposition.
John said in the beginning of 4:4 “Ye are of God.” Yes they were!
They were of God because they had been born again. When they admitted their sin to God and placed their faith in the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, they were saved from the wrath of God, and they also were born again into God’s family.
You must be Born Again
In John 3:3 Jesus said to one of the religious leaders of the day “Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.”
Please know this vital truth. Every person is spiritually dead from birth. That’s why Jesus said what He did.
In Ephesians 2:1 Paul, speaking to believers said “And you hath he quickened, (made alive) who were dead in trespasses and sins;”
They WERE dead but they were made Spiritually ALIVE when they trusted in Christ.
Have you been born again? For that is where the power to overcome comes from!
God Living Within You
These believers had God living in them through the person of the Holy Spirit.
If you have have been born again, you too have the very same Holy Spirit residing within you.
You are God’s child. You have a heavenly father who is the Almighty God, who loves and cares for you. Think of that!! And we know God is GREATER than anything you will ever face in the world. John tells them just that.
To end verse 4:4 John tells them “Greater is He that is in YOU than he that is in the WORLD.”
Their victory wasn’t rooted in their intellect, maturity, or strength — it was rooted in their identity.
Their strength wasn’t in WHO they were. It was in WHOSE they were! They were of God and because of that victory had already been won!
*In part 2 we will dive into more of this great truth.
INSIGHT
(What did you get from the reading?)
When you hear someone teaching about God or spiritual truth, what do you typically compare it to — Scripture or your personal feelings and experiences?
Are there voices in your life right now (social media, podcasts, books, conversations) that you’ve accepted as truth without testing them against God’s Word?
Do you believe that the Holy Spirit actively helps you discern truth from error, or do you tend to rely more on your own understanding?
In what ways do you see the “world’s way of thinking” trying to influence how you define truth, morality, or identity?
INSIGHT TO IMPACTING REAL LIFE
How will the insight you got Impact your everyday life?
Is there an area in your life where you’ve felt pressured to compromise biblical truth in order to fit in with cultural expectations?
What is one teaching or belief you’ve recently heard that you need to examine more closely in light of Scripture?
How would your daily Bible reading change if you consistently asked the Holy Spirit to help you recognize truth and reject what is false?
Are you walking in confidence that God’s Spirit within you is greater than anything you face — or are you living as though the world has the upper hand?
What is one practical step you can take this week to test what you hear against God’s Word?
